The main thematic area of the programme is the improvement of the relationship between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and their regions through the development and professionalization of Higher Education management.
In general the programme focuses on HE-Management, region Governance, regional growth partnerships and agreements, the role of higher education institutions in regional policy both as an instrument of regional policy and as a regional stakeholder, relevant changes in higher education management
The summer school will encourage exchange between research and education, permit an international exchange process on student and academic staff level and allow the partner institutions to share best practices, mapping and updating state of the art education and research. It will also be exploring ways to foster more cooperation and show the differences in the relationship “HEI and Regional Development” between Northern, Middle and South Europe. Furthermore the programme will promote synergies between teaching and research by encouraging state of the art research and ensure the sustainability of the impact of HE-management to regional development.

The summer school takes place at the Danube University Krems, Europe’s only state university for postgraduate education. The university’s Department for Continuing Education Research and Educational Management combines applied research, postgraduate studies and institutional and policy consultancy work. The department consists of three professors, 5 senior researchers and 6 researchers as well as administrative staff and associated professors as members of boards and engaged as lecturers. Research and the master programme "Higher Education and Research Management" are based on the idea of the higher education institutions as expert organizations. The department’s activities are directed toward professionalizing higher education management. A second branch of activities is professional teaching and training and preparation of institutions for life long learning. Concepts of life long learning require the combination of continuing education in the context of enterprises and firms and higher education institutions.
