Dissertation on the topic „Schengen“ was honored at the Danube University Krems
25.11.2003
Krems (kpr). Dr. Klaus Famira received the Jean-Monnet science award on Friday, 21 November 2003, for his dissertation on the integration of the acquired Schengen rights into the European Union. Famira studied and conducted research in Innsbruck, Vienna, New York, and in Oxford; furthermore, he serves as adviser to the embassy of the permanent Austrian representation in the NATO in Brussels. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Manfred Straube, head of the Department of European Integration and president of the Austrian Society of European Law, presented the award in the course of a ceremony held at the Danube University Krems.
In the event of the 20th anniversary of the death of Jean Monnet, the Austrian Society of European Law invited to tender the Jean-Monnet science award for European law – named after the French politician and European ideologue - for the first time in 1999. For the fifth time in a row, a German dissertation, dealing with contemporary legal issues in the field of European law and providing an ample contribution to European integration corresponding to Jean Monnet, received the award this year. Due to the significance of the topic and the high level of contents, the award committee – active chairman Prof. Dr. Manfred Straube - unanimously voted for the dissertation of Klaus Famira. The dissertation receiving the award will be published in the European Law Edition of New Science Publishing in Vienna.

During the ceremonial speech, Prof. Dr. Friedl Weiss - professor of International and European Economic Law and Organisation at the University of Amsterdam – lectured on the concepts of „the people“ and „the nation“, as well as on their tense relationship towards a unified Europe, under the motto „A.E.I.E.U.“, using the (identity-)history of Austria as an example.
