The Center for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics is about to open, to broaden the scope of the internationally established Department for Clinical Medicine and Biotechnology at the Danube University Krems, Austria, in response to an increasing demand for mathematical, statistical and computer methods in medicine and the biosciences.

The aim of the new Center for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics is the development and application of computer algorithms and statistical methods in the biomedical sciences, biotechnology as well as clinical medicine. Its interdisciplinary research will be internationally oriented, and unique in Europe because of a special focus on computational and statistical aspects of genomic and proteomic data integration, also in combination with clinical evidence.

The already existing Chair of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics is offering national and regional competence in its disciplines embedded in an international network of research institutions. It provides consulting services (incl. clinical trials), project support, research cooperations and academic expertise following the principles of good scientific practice.

In spring 2010 a new international Master of Science Program in Computational Life Sciences will start at the Center for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics. Teaching will be provided by an international faculty of leading researchers and developers from academia as well as the pharmaceutical and biotech industry. In most countries the established teaching programs tend to focus either on bioinformatics or on general statistics, producing qualifications not meeting the interdisciplinary demands of employers. The integration of biomathematics, biostatistics and bioinformatics in postgraduate teaching at the Center for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics will be an innovation for Europe. For Austria it will be for the first time that a formal university qualification in biostatistics is offered. More information will be made available soon.
