The Cell Biology unit focuses on the characterization of unknown factors in various illness profiles such as sepsis and multi-organ failure. These factors represent possible targets for extracorporeal blood purification systems. Microarray experiments have revealed specific mediators that will be investigated with cell culture models established in our lab. Another project is the development of an endothelial cell bioreactor that can be used as an artificial blood vessel during adsorber tests as well as in investigations of blood vessel diseases, control of medicine, and more. As well, the unit is continually developing an established MDS System. Through the introduction of human liver cells into the system, the MDS will be able to serve as a bioartificial liver with multifaceted breakdown functions as well as synthesis functions. Additionally, the unit is involved in the development and establishment of new systems for testing the biological compatibility of adsorber materials. These testing systems will also be available for external use.
