Development of an Adsorptive Blood Purification System called Prometheus

The Prometheus-System is a development which intends to eliminate protein bound substances from the blood of patients who have acute liver failure.

Albuflow(R) (Albuminfilter)



This will be achieved through the use of a membrane modul (Albuflow) which has the primary function of permeating albumin out of the blood and which also enables effective therapy for patients with acute liver failure by using adsorber capsules.

In Prometheus, as opposed to MDS, the adsorber materials are encapsulated (picture on right). With each treatment, two capsules are used. The first capsule is filled with a neutral resin which adsorbs hydrophobic substances such as the aromatic amino acids (tryptophan, pheylalanine, tyrosine), gall acids and phenolic substances. The second capsule is filled with an anion replacer resin which very effectively adsorbs bilirubin, a by product of red blood cells.
