Cost-effectiveness considerations play an ever growing role in health care institutions. Since the introduction of performance-based hospital funding, the pressure on hospital managers and department heads has increased enormously. Today's hospitals are complex, interdisciplinary organizations requiring effective, market-oriented management. Patient's growing demand for higher quality services, coupled with mounting pressure from the competition, pose a great challenge to hospital managers and executives. Professionally managed departments are an essential part of responding to these challenges, a skill taught in the university course "Health Care Management - Hospital Management."
