New technological possibilities and globalisation have had a strong impact on social change and have therefore created a demand for developing innovative answers to poverty, exclusion, aging society, work-life balance, communications and learning possibilities in educational environment, globalisation of financial-, production and general key markets, climate changes etc. Social innovations are as crucial for economic development as product and process innovations.

Considering these recent developments, the theory and application of social innovations became increasingly important over the last years - nationally, internationally and regionally. Besides initiatives in the White House, where US President Barrack Obama established an “Office for Social Innovation and Civic Participation”, as well as by the UN and the OECD, the subject has had a significant effect especially on the European level and is also reflected in particular implementations in Austria. Promoted by this new trend “Social Innovator” will be one of the most requested professional profiles for creating sustainable solutions for the future in all societal fields.
