On 14th of February an Expert Roundtable on Sustainable Development took place in Tokyo on the topic “Structuring Research on Sustainable Digital Environments (SDE)". The Tokyo Expert Roundtable will be supplemented by an European and North-American Roundtable.
Digital technologies are transforming all domains of economic, sociopolitical, (bio-)technological, environmental and other systems. Up to now, much research has been spent on the development and implementation of digital technologies. Yet rather few research has been done on reflecting on and anticipating unintended side effects which may endanger systems and structures that are conceived as valuable and which contribute to the resilience of socio-technological systems.
In order to cope properly with the Janus-faced nature of the digital transition, we have not only to identify, analyze, or manage specific risks and vulnerabilities. The expert workshop aspires to go beyond a mere description of single risks and threats and aspires to sketch conceptual and theoretical frameworks or perspectives which allow for an overarching structuring of unintended side effects of the digital transition.
The Tokyo Expert Roundtable will be supplemented by an European and North-American Roundtable. These roundtables will be followed by a transdisciplinary process on the challenge of Sustainable Digital Environments when including representatives from key-stakeholder groups.
