About the Project

BACKGROUND

Armenian manuscripts and printed books represent a rich and diverse cultural heritage. Research on Armenian book culture has traditionally focused on aspects such as script, illumination, and binding structures. However, the textiles associated with these books have received far less scholarly attention. Nevertheless, they provide valuable evidence about craftsmanship, production techniques, and the cultural contexts in which books were produced and used.

RESEARCH FOCUS

The project “Textiles in Armenian Manuscripts and Printed Books” investigates the presence, functions, and meanings of textiles in Armenian book culture from the manuscript period to the era of early printing. Textiles were used both for practical purposes—such as strengthening bindings or repairing damaged structures—and for decorative purposes, including luxurious coverings made from silk or velvet. By studying these materials, the project explores how textiles contributed to the physical construction, durability, and visual appearance of Armenian books.

OBJECTIVES

Through the systematic documentation of surviving examples, the project seeks to establish a clearer overview of how textiles were integrated into Armenian book production and use and how this knowledge can contribute to conservation in the future.

METHODOLOGY

The research combines approaches from manuscript studies, textile analysis, and conservation. This interdisciplinary approach allows the project to connect the study of bookbinding with broader questions related to craftsmanship, material culture, and cultural exchange.
