Description

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) represent an extremely heterogeneous population. They differ in biogenesis and size and can be associated with different biomolecules. In recent years, a panel of methods for the characterization of EVs in blood has been established at the Department of Biomedical Research of the Danube University Krems and their coagulation-promoting and immunomodulating properties in the context of inflammatory processes have been investigated. The aim of this project is to further develop the flow cytometric characterization of extracellular vesicles in order to continuously adapt the available spectrum of methods to the latest technical possibilities. This methodological advancement forms the basis for the functional characterization of EVs in order to (i) investigate their involvement in the development and course of various diseases (inflammation, sepsis, oncological diseases) as well as regenerative processes, (ii) test their suitability as diagnostic markers, and (iii) develop methods for obtaining defined vesicle populations - perspectively with therapeutic application.
