SUMMARY:Annual Conference of the Project “European Dis/Orders”
UID:8a0e3ef3-6a75-4735-a089-16f73055b065@donau-uni.ac.at
DESCRIPTION:Borders are not inherent\; instead\, they arise from politica
l\, social\, or geographical processes. They do not merely function as b
arriers\; they can also serve as points of connection. Borders represent
a space of encounter\, sometimes seen as a “non-place.” They are dynami
c\; they shift through observation and reconstruction. Despite their flu
id nature\, borders are often perceived and depicted as rigid and unchan
ging entities. “Borders” are marked on maps\, constructed in political d
iscussions\, negotiated within societies and artistic contexts\, and som
etimes crossed – whether they vanish due to climate crisis or are breach
ed in the context of migration. “Borders” can be physical\, legal\, or s
ocietal\, and they also serve to emphasize and perpetuate differences an
d inequalities. The act of “border-drawing” symbolizes the process of es
tablishing and reinforcing these divisions\, which can contribute to soc
ial\, political\, or cultural tensions. The conference will be divided i
nto 3 panels: Human Geography (Migration and Environmental Policy)\, His
tory (Identities in the Upper Adriatic)\, and Politics (Populist Narrati
 ves and Practices of Borders).
