The Department for Arts and Cultural Studies examines the forms, content, and contextual conditions of art and culture in historical and contemporary societies. It also addresses the transformations brought about by digitization, globalization, social transformation, commercialization, and climate change.

Interdisciplinary teams comprising scholars from the fields of history, art and cultural history, archaeology, musicology, German studies, comparative literature, cultural property protection, and information and media studies, work in various configurations to conduct research in the core fields of cultural history and museum collection studies; digital cultures and digital humanities; and cultural heritage, cultural property protection, and cultural heritage institutions. The department also develops a portfolio of innovative university-level continuing education programs for professionals in the arts and culture sector.

A distinctive feature of the department is its cooperation with the State of Lower Austria, whereby archives and cultural collections are entrusted to the department for scholarly processing. In conjunction with department’s own holdings and digital collections, these collections constitute a significant resource for teaching and research.
