For the fourth year in a row, Gerald Gartlehner, expert in evidence-based medicine at the University for Continuing Education Krems, has been named one of the world's most cited researchers in his field. This is the result of the "Highly Cited Researchers" survey carried out annually by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) of the Clarivate data group. In 2024, a total of 6,886 people were named "Highly Cited Researchers". Among them were 42 researchers working in Austria.

The rigorous selection process for the list of “Highly Cited Researchers” is based on data from the Web of Science™ and a qualitative analysis conducted by experts from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)™ at the data company Clarivate. Each selected researcher has written several Highly Cited Papers™ that, over the past ten years, have been among the top one percent of citations in their respective subject area and year of publication in the Web of Science; in addition to citations, other criteria are also used for the selection. The data company Clarivate thus identifies scientists who have a significant and broad influence in their field.

“For me, being part of this group is a recognition of our scientific work at the Department for Evidence-Based Medicine and Evaluation at the University for Continuing Education Krems. The high number of citations shows the great interest in sound, evidence-based health research that is highly relevant both scientifically and in terms of societal impact,” says Prof. Dr. Gerald Gartlehner, head of the department, who is also a researcher at the Research Triangle Institute-International in the USA. Gartlehner concludes by saying that the University for Continuing Education Krems has developed a successful research focus in evidence-based medicine that addresses relevant societal challenges in times of scientific scepticism and conspiracy theories.
