The University for Continuing Education Krems has successfully continued on its path of internationalization, promoting early-stage researchers, and further developing its research profile in 2024. Measured by the net present value per 100 scientists, the University of Krems ranks among the top five Austrian public universities in terms of research funding from the Horizon Europe program.

“Societal impact is an important feature of our research. We integrate knowledge from various disciplines, drawing on practical expertise to help solve current and future societal challenges”, says Prof. Dr. Viktoria Weber, Vice Rector for Research and Sustainable Development.

Strong international roots

The University for Continuing Education Krems continued to deepen its integration into European networks in 2024. It currently coordinates six Horizon Europe projects. According to a recent evaluation by Unidata and the European Commission, the University for Continuing Education Krems ranks fifth among public universities in terms of project funding per 100 scientists in the European research framework program Horizon Europe.

There was also a significant increase in the number of FWF-funded projects (17), as well as in application-oriented research projects funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) (37).

Additional PhD studies and increased funding from career programs

Two ERC Starting Grants for female researchers at the University for Continuing Education Krems and a total of ten grants as part of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships and the FWF programs ESPRIT and Elise Richter demonstrate the university's commitment to promoting young researchers. The university will continue to promote academic staff in the future by expanding its mobility grants.

The fourth PhD program accredited by AQ-Austria began its activities in 2024. The PhD program in Applied Evidence Synthesis in Health Research reflects the university's leading role in evidence-based medicine and its evaluation. In the first half of 2025, the fifth PhD program was established with the iCELL PhD program, which focuses on continuing education and lifelong learning.

In 2024, the University for Continuing Education Krems has further developed its research profile, which now comprises six main fields of research: Cultural Heritage, Educational Technologies and Continuing Education Research, Evidence-Based Health Research, Innovation for Cohesive and Sustainable Societies, Preventive and Regenerative Medicine, and Transnational Societies and Migration.

Research in figures

The success of research at the University for Continuing Education Krems is also reflected in figures. In 2024, third-party funding amounted to €12.945 million. This represents an increase of nearly 19 percent compared to 2023. Research expenditure rose to around €22 million. In 2024, a total of 209 third-party funded research projects were carried out by 387 researchers. Of the 468 publications, 179 were published in SCI, SSCI, or A&HCI journals. The proportion of open access publications is around 80 percent.

In the coming years, the University of Krems will continue to focus on strengthening its integration into international and European research networks, expanding its PhD programs, and increasing its support for young scientists. The university will place particular emphasis on strengthening technology transfer; a Technology Transfer Office was established in 2024. Another project is the expansion of the research infrastructure as part of the Core Facility Campus Krems.
