The Center for Experimental Medicine aims at unraveling the biological principles of regeneration and degeneration. Stem cell research holds tremendous promise for potential medical treatments in order to counteract degeneration to modulate inflammation associated with tissue destruction or even to regenerate damaged organs. The identification of molecular keys for the conversion of stem cells into lineage specific cells of tissues and organs, knowledge on specific bioactive substances for stem cell communication as well as relevant biophysical stimuli for stem cell integration into niches are fundamental to application of stem cells.
The Center for Biomedical Technology focuses on the development of systems and technologies for extracorporeal blood purification, in particular on adsorbent-based technologies for liver support or immunomodulation in sepsis. Blood compatible materials, cell culture models to study endothelial activation under septic conditions, the influence of anticoagulation on the blood compatibility of extracorporeal therapies, as well as the multiple roles of extracellular vesicles and their biological activity are in the center of our research.
