The MA (CE) Music Business and Culture is an international, cutting-edge program that combines all aspects and complexities of the music business sector. The program includes courses on music organizations, music entrepreneurship, music economy, IP law, cultural management, as well as courses on timely issues and challenges the music sector is facing such as gender and intersectionality, sustainability, globalization, the digital shift, and careers. The program offers a balanced mix of theory and practice, as well as networking opportunities with international experts and practitioners. It is English speaking, low-residency and can be combined with one’s professional career and work path.

The master's program is aimed at people who already work, or wish to have a career in the music business as entrepreneurs or in music institutions. It is suitable for people with professional training in the broader music sector (e.g. music entrepreneurs, music and theater scholars, music educators, musicians, music producers) or with working experience in a music organization or in a related area (e.g. music archives, music publishers, collecting societies, music media).

The study program with 120 ECTS points can be completed within 5 semesters while working. There are two weeks per semester of on-site attendance, supplemented by online courses and independent learning in between.

The study programme consists of compulsory modules (90 ECTS points), elective courses (9 ECTS points) and the Master's thesis (21 ECTS points). The selection of elective courses must be recorded in a "Learning Agreement" during the admission interview.

    Music Organisations is a Certificate Program that provides specialized, up-to-date and cutting-edge knowledge in a variety of theoretical and practical issues pertaining to music organisations. The programme, taught in English, includes topics regarding the structures and governance of music organisations, management and leadership, communication and PR for music organisations, festivals and events management, and audiences in the culture and music sectors.

    It is taking into consideration developments in the area of music organisations in Europe and worldwide, making it an idea choice for young graduates who wish to pursue a career in a music organisations, or established professionals who want to acquire an academic knowledge and degree in the field.

    Das Certificate Program (CP) Music and Entrepreneurship ist ein internationales Weiterbildungsprogramm, das in englischer Sprache unterrichtet wird und den Studierenden Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten vermittelt, um eine Karriere in der Musikbranche anzustreben. Der Unterricht umfasst Themen wie Kulturwirtschaft, Urheberrecht und rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen in der Musikbranche, Künstlermanagement, Auswirkungen der Technologie sowie digitales Marketing und Vertrieb.

    Das Programm eignet sich für Absolvent_innen, die beispielsweise eine Karriere als Unternehmer_innen oder Künstlermanager_innen anstreben, oder für etablierte Fachleute, die ihr Wissen auf den neuesten Stand bringen, einen aktuellen Überblick über den Musikbusiness-Sektor gewinnen und sich mit internationalen Kollegen vernetzen möchten, seien es Dozent_innen oder Student_innen.

    The Music, Aesthetics and Society Certificate Program is an international program taught in English, designed to offer up-to-date knowledge on conditions and topics that affect the governance and operation of the music sector of today. Classes include topics on areas such as music aesthetics, curating, programming and artistic planning, cultural policy, cultural diplomacy, cultural democracy, sustainability, diversity, music psychology, music careers, music in a transdisciplinary context and in relation to areas such as archives, architecture, or games.

    The programme is suitable for graduates who would like to gain a more theoretical and contextual perspective of areas important for the music sector, as well as professionals who wish to expand their understanding on the socioeconomic conditions that shape the function of the music sector of today.

    Methods of Arts and Cultural Studies

    Topics include: Academic Writing, Digital Competences, Inter- and Transdisciplinary Methods, Media Literacy.

    International case studies in music
    (9 ECTS, Elective Courses from the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies)

    To deepen the content and set a focus, students can choose courses from the Department of Art and Cultural Studies in the following subject areas:

    - emerging technologies in the creative industry
    - music collections and archives in international context
    - music organizations in international contexts
    - music entrepreneurship in international context

  • Subject-related degree at least at Bachelor's level (180 ECTS points)
  • Two years of qualified professional experience
