Examinations and Assessment

At UWK, examinations are either course-based or module-based, depending on what is specified in the curriculum.
In course examinations, grading is based on the content of the individual course. These examinations may be oral or written, or may take the form of a written paper.
In courses with continuous assessment, grading is based on partial assessments carried out during the course.
In module examinations, performance is assessed based on the content of the entire module. These examinations may take the form of an oral exam, a written exam, or a written paper.

This means that the assessment is carried out by an examination board consisting of at least three members. This type of examination may be specified in the curriculum.
In any case, the third retake of an exam must be conducted as a board examination. Upon request by the student, the second retake may also be held in this form.

Exams that have been passed may be retaken once within 12 months of the original attempt. In this case, only the grade of the most recent attempt counts, regardless of whether it is better, worse, or the same as the previous one.
If an exam was not passed, students generally have three opportunities to retake it.
 

Grades follow the Austrian five-point scale, ranging from 1 (excellent) to 5 (fail).
Alternatively, if a numeric grade is not appropriate, assessments may be recorded as “successfully completed” or “not successfully completed.”

Plagiarism is defined as the unauthorized use of another person's intellectual property. It occurs when texts, content, or ideas are taken and presented as one’s own.
If an attempt at deception is discovered, the consequences – depending on the extent of the plagiarism and the time at which it is identified – may range from a grade reduction or a failing grade, to a requirement to rewrite a (final) thesis, and in severe cases, even to the revocation of an academic degree.
