Staying put by staying in motion? (DEMIG Online Talk)

The next event of our DEMIG Online Talk series will take place on December 12 at 2 p.m. Geographer Suzy Blondin will discuss the multiple effects of environmental conditions on (im)mobilities in Tajikistan’s Pamir Mountains. The lecture previously planned for November 27 had to be cancelled due to an unforeseeable scheduling conflict.

Spring School: Approaching Irregular Migration from a Quantitative Perspective: Data, Estimates, Methods

Do you research irregular migration? Then our free MIrreM Spring School might be just for you! It will take place from 19 - 21 March 2025, in Krems. It offers intensive training in the use and interpretation of available data and estimates related to irregular migration. Participants will engage in hands-on courses on: statistical indicators and estimation methods for irregular migration; conceptual discussions about measuring stocks and flows; and defining migrants with irregular status.

Public database on irregular migration stock estimates

Recently, the MIRREM project team released a new public database which brings together and assesses the latest estimates of how many migrants with irregular migration status live in various European countries and North America. The Database substantially updates previous assessments of the irregular migrant population in Europe, such as the estimates by the Clandestino research project dating back to 2008 and a subsequent study by the Pew Research Centre from 2019.

ERC Starting Grant to Lea Mueller-Funk

We're delighted for Lea Müller-Funk, who has been awarded the ERC Starting Grant for her project RESTATE. She will investigate how refugees perceive the state and state violence before, during and after their flight and how these experiences influence their political participation. This is the second time this grant has been awarded to a researcher from our department.
