Upskill & Advance Stacks
courses listed below: Cultural Economy: Project Creation, Digital Archiving for Cultural Institutions, Cultural Heritage Law and Practice, Audience Development in the Digital Age, Grant Writing and Research Funding in the Arts
You already know your field. You have the experience, the professional track record, and the contextual knowledge that only comes from years of practice. What has changed is the field itself — new tools, new methods, new regulatory frameworks, new cultural contexts — and keeping pace with that change at academic level is not something a short online course or a professional conference can fully deliver.
Upskill & Advance Stacks are built for exactly this situation. They bring current academic knowledge directly to working professionals, in concentrated form, at a level that respects what participants already know. These are not introductory offerings. They assume expertise and build on it.
What Connects These Stacks
Each Upskill & Advance Stack is developed around a knowledge area that is evolving — where the gap between current practice and current research is wide enough that closing it matters professionally. The content is drawn from accredited UWK courses, co-developed with practitioners and field specialists, and delivered in formats that fit around a working schedule. Credits earned at Crediting tier are the most likely of any Krems Culture Stacks category to transfer directly toward existing Certificate Programs and Master's degrees at UWK.
What to expect
- Academic-level content in a concentrated, professionally relevant format
- Co-developed with practitioners and field specialists — not designed in isolation from the sector
- Participants typically hold a degree and several years of professional experience — the group dynamic reflects that
- Flexible participation: Observer, Participant, or Crediting tier — full details on each individual Stack page
- Credits earned at Crediting tier carry strong transfer potential toward UWK Certificate Programs and Master's degrees in related fields

Cultural Economy: Project Creation
Upskill & Advance · 6 credits · Hybrid — intensive block + online work sessions · German / English
You work in culture. You have ideas worth funding. What you need is the project management vocabulary, the budget structure, and the feasibility framework to make them legible to the people who give grants, commission work, or approve institutional budgets. This Stack combines academic grounding in cultural economics with applied project development — participants leave with a real draft proposal and faculty feedback on its quality and feasibility. Relevant to cultural managers, curators, festival organisers, heritage professionals, and independent practitioners across the arts sector.

Digital Archiving for Cultural Institutions
Upskill & Advance · 6 credits · Online or Hybrid · German / English
Digital preservation is no longer a specialist function sitting at the edge of a cultural institution's work — it is central to it. This Stack brings together current academic and professional standards in digital archiving with hands-on application, designed specifically for archivists, librarians, curators, and collection managers who are navigating the shift to digital workflows without always having had formal training in what that requires.
