Conference Theme

Migration is a complex and dynamic phenomenon that shapes societies and economies worldwide. While some migration movements adhere to established legal frameworks and follow regular pathways, a considerable number of migrants embark on irregular migration journeys, often propelled by dire circumstances. The 2025 IMISCOE Spring Conference on The Regularity of Irregularity: Rethinking Migration Paradigms aims to explore and deepen our understanding of irregular migration processes, migration governance, and the integration, settlement, and return of migrants. This conference will delve into the multifaceted aspects of migrant irregularity, examining the underlying factors, policy responses, and the experiences of migrants navigating irregular pathways and finding themselves in a precarious legal situation at different points of their trajectories. By exploring often-overlooked aspects associated with irregular migration, this conference seeks to foster a comprehensive understanding of this intricate phenomenon.

By the end of the conference, participants will have gained a deeper understanding of the complexities and implications of irregular migration. The exchange of knowledge and ideas will contribute to the development of evidence-based policies and practices concerning irregular migration processes, governance, and migrant integration. It is hoped that the insights generated during the conference will inform policymakers, practitioners, and researchers working in the field, leading to more effective approaches to address the challenges of irregular migration and enhance the inclusion of migrants within societies.
