Stroke recurrence increases the risk of disability. Patients suffering recurrent strokes are older and often impaired by their previous stroke. Thus these patients may need special management to recover functional independence.

Aim of this study is to compare the characteristics of first-ever ischemic stroke and recurrent ischemic strokes enrolled between 2003 and 2014 in the Austrian Stroke Unit Registry. Identifying characteristics of patients suffering recurrent stroke could help identifying special needs and to adapt stroke management.
