Dysphagia is frequent complication after acute stroke and has been observed in up to two third of patients. Dysphagia is associated with a higher risk of pneumonia, increased mortality and permanent disability. To prevent aspiration pneumonia, the stroke unit in Tulln uses the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS) for the identification of high risk patients and applies its dietary recommendations.
Aim of this registry analysis is to investigate the influence of the systematic use of the GUSS on post-stroke pneumonia in stroke patients admitted from 2012 until 2014 at the stroke unit in Tulln. The association between the incidence of pneumonia during hospital stay and the use of GUSS, the severity of dysphagia, the prescribed diet and other stroke and management specific variables will be tested.
