Online Talk: European Attitudes Towards Immigration

Are Europeans becoming more hostile to immigration? Can political rhetoric readily change their minds? And how directly do public attitudes influence elections and migration policy? Drawing on decades of comparative survey evidence and his new book, co-authored with Andrew Geddes, James Dennison challenges these familiar assumptions. In his online talk on 8 October, he shows that attitudes towards immigration are often nuanced and relatively stable, while the importance people attach to the issue can change considerably. Understanding when immigration becomes a political priority helps explain shifts in party politics and the growing selectivity of migration policies.
