Modelling and Simulation
Modelling and simulation are core competences at DISS that have been evolved and perfected over the last decade. The available expertise goes far beyond the straightforward application of well-established proprietary software packages like COMSOL® or ANSYS®, and covers the full range from analytical over semi-analytical/numerical modelling to self-coded computer numerical simulation algorithms.
As extremely versatile topic, modelling and simulation activities are integral parts of basically all research activities carried out at the department. They may involve:
- Multi-physics simulations (taking interactions of different energy domains into account)
- Multiple length scale simulations (e.g., investigation of how nano-scale effects can be exploited in the development of micro and nano sensors)
- Different abstraction levels comprising physical, device, system, or network simulations
- Combining different simulation techniques (e.g., analytical and semi-analytical approaches, finite element methods, boundary element methods, discrete-event methods, electric circuit and network simulation with SPICE® und OMNET®)
All these methods are used at DISS in the development and optimization of sensors and actuators, in the design and characterization of functional materials, in model-based measurement data evaluation, as well as in system and network simulations.
